Burton beaten at the finish

Steve Harris26 Apr 2010 - 17:55

What a glorious day to end the season with fine weather, good support and all the Oxhay. Only Sandbach could spoil the party

With several absentees Burton fielded the strongest side they could and with several subs, the team would be changed at half time to let all the lads have a game.
Sandbach were physically a lot bigger than the Burton boys, but the Burton lads always like a challenge. The first half saw both sides playing good physical rugby with both sets of forwards not backing down from their opposition whilst both back lines looked to run the ball, but were cancelled out by some hard tackling and quick closing down of the opposition. It was Burton who were getting the upper hand and pushing for the Sandbach line, however there was a turnover ball and the Sandbach team broke through a disorganised Burton defence to score the first try that went unconverted Sandbach 5 Burton 0 as the try went unconverted.
Burton's response was immediate again attacking the Sandbach line which meant that they gave away a penalty, looking to put points on the board Burton elected to kick, but unfortunately missed and with neither side getting the upper hand the half ended 5-0 to Sandbach.

The second half started brightly for Burton as they looked to undo the Sandbach defence and their fullback who didn't look too happy in his position.Sandbach gave away a penalty 5 meters out and George Prince saw a gap and bashed through to get Burton back in the game however his try went unconverted 5-5.
Burton again were pushing forward when Elliott Minns saw a gap in their defence and put a clever little kick through which the oppositions fullback found hard to cope with, the result was a 5 meter scrum for Burton.Quick ball out from the back of the scrum saw the ball end up in the hands of Andrew Bird who went over in the corner to score for Burton which again went unconverted. Sandbach 5 Burton 10.
However the rest of the half saw Burton pressing forward to close the game off only to be caught out by the Sandbach back line who broke out to score the rest of the points for the game which resulted in the end Sandbach scoring another 21 points to end the game winning 26- Burton 10.

Burton missed several key players but the lads who stepped into their shoes showed some real guts and determination, they were only beaten by breakaway tries, a good display of team work once again from Burton against a physically bigger side.

Well its the end of another season and we have come a long way, so lets rest up over the summer and look forward to another cracking 2010/2011 season.
